Nectan and the Cup-Bearers

NECTAN AND THE CUP-BEARERS is the second in the series that explores Druidic lives, this time in seventh-century Cornwall, England.

Steaphag is a chaste and inexperienced woman who, as an “old maid” of fifteen years, sets off from her Irish home with several others to locate the water god Neckan’s holy falls.  Once their quest is completed, they attempt to settle in Cornwall for a life of contemplation, peace and service to the locals only to be devastated by tragedy.

When their chief Druid, Ysidric, is violently murdered by Roman priests, Steaphag and Nectan must choose either a quiescent or an eye-for-an-eye response.

As a young adult, Nectan enjoys a privileged life at the court of King Brian as a friend to several of Brian’s many offspring.  He’s able to practice his Druidry in safety until Patrick the priest arrives in Ireland.  Driving out the snakes both animal and human, Patrick becomes the favored one of the king.  As such, he demands of Brian that the Pagans depart, and Nectan, Ysidric, Patricia and Steaphag are sent away.

Being the elder, Ysidric has been the leader of the tiny group, but his murder in Cornwall sets Nectan on a dizzying course to find and punish the killer while retaining his faith.  With Camelot as a backdrop, the Druids face the always-present dichotomy between the two beliefs, Christianity and the Old Religion.  Things only become more complex when Ysidric’s murderers are discovered to be Roman priests.

Nectan stunningly finds himself not only a student of the elusive Merlin but also a trusted advisor to Arthur himself.  He and his beloved, Steaphag, must somehow balance a loving family life with the hunt for deranged madmen.  Their objective ranges across the whole of Britain, into the wild forests of Brittany, and at last to the very seat of Roman power. Ultimately Nectan must somehow evolve into the leader his love and his Goddess know him to be.
